I spent the better part of the last couple hours writing a scholarship essay. I am applying for an OSU Undergraduate Library Research Award. It is a $1000 scholarship that goes to the undergraduate who "through the comprehensive use of the OSU Libraries, demonstrates outstanding research, scholarship, and originality in writing a paper or completing a project." I don't know exactly what that means but I did spend 40+ hours in the University Archives last term putting together a weighty essay entitled, "Leading the Way to Real Progress: The Portland Urban League, 1964-1970.
The essay is mostly original scholarship. I pored over hundreds of primary source documents in order to put together the first historical narrative ever on this topic. It kind of makes me proud. I think I have a good chance of winning the award.
Though I am proud of my paper, I DO NOT like writing scholarship essays. It always makes me feel insincere to try to fit into the narrow requirements laid out by most scholarships and I hate that feeling.
